چکیده

This paper addresses the particular need to develop suitable fabrication techniques of glasses to improve the radiation-resistance and extend the lifetime of optical fibres in high radiation background. Two radiation hardening techniques based on hydrogen and fluorine doping of glass have been applied on step index pure silica core optical fibres. The radiation-induced optical absorption and luminescence have been measured in gamma and fission reactor irradiation conditions at SCKCEN, Mol Belgium. The experimental results show that the lowest optical absorption is achieved in the hydrogen-treated fibre sample. However, the luminescence effect remains significant in any type of fibre and cannot be reduced by the investigated radiation hardening techniques. 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Round-robin evaluation of optical fibres for plasma diagnostics

Optical plasma diagnostic systems often require a complex optical path involving mirrors, lenses and windows. The use of optical fibres could significantly simplify the design of such a system. Radiation-induced effects, namely induced absorption and luminescence, may compromise the integration of optical fibres in the diagnostic system. However, recent developments of new fused silica glass ty...

The Design and Implementation of Diagnostic Systems on ITER*

In order to meet the expected needs for first wall and plasma measurements, ITER will require about 40 different diagnostic systems drawn from all the main generic diagnostic groups – magnetics, neutron systems, optical and microwave systems, spectroscopic, bolometric, probes, pressure gauges and gas analysers. The design and implementation of the diagnostic systems is a major challenge because...

Radiation-resistant WDM Optical Link for Thermonuclear Fusion Reactor Instrumentation

The future International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is a complex installation that will require permanent monitoring and frequent maintenance operations. The high-gamma dose rates, the high neutron fluence and other radiological hazards call for the use of remotehandled equipment. The management of heavy umbilicals connecting the control systems with the remote tools is therefore...

Update on the status of the ITER ECE diagnostic design

Considerable progress has been made on the design of the ITER electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostic over the past two years. Radial and oblique views are still included in the design in order to measure distortions in the electron momentum distribution, but the oblique view has been redirected to reduce stray millimeter radiation from the electron cyclotron heating system. A major challe...

Particle deposition and optical response of ITER Motional Stark Effect diagnostic first mirrors

Particle deposition/erosion can affect mirrors used in plasma diagnostics and this is a major concern for future fusion reactors. This subject is analyzed for the first and second mirrors of the proposed Motional Stark Effect edge plasma current diagnostic for ITER. Particle fluxes to the diagnostic module aperture are given by edge-plasma/impurity-transport solutions for convective plasma flow...
